Durham's Congestion Charge

... was introduced some four months ahead of London's. It covers Saddler Street, which is the only public access road leading to the World Heritage Site of the city's cathedral and castle. The street is used by an estimated 17,000 pedestrians a day, and following the introduction of the charge the number of vehicles using it (previously around 3,000 per day) fell by approximately 85%.

Access to Saddler Street was initially controlled by means of a retractable bollard, and it was reported in 2007 that the bollard had been responsible for damage to 300 vehicles. In 2011 it was replaced by an automatic vehicle number plate recognition system.
